Turmeric Hummus

Simple every day basics always have a place in my home. Served here with oatcakes, just as happily alongside a plate of beautiful chopped carrots, fresh baby radishes + sliced cucumbers with the skins left on.

I do have a recipe for homemade hummus here on the website, if you wish to make your own please search in the menu. This turmeric hummus is for fast and furious days when only shop-bought will do; shop-bought with a boost!

Turmeric is well studied in the literature; thousands of research papers extoll the anti-inflammatory properties of its' active ingredient curcumin. (Head over to the blog to read more about Curcumin and Inflammation). Here I wish simply to highlight the fact that whole foods are 'synergistic'; they work best in synergy with other whole foods. As Batman is to Robin and Bonnie is to Clyde, so Black Pepper is to Turmeric... or more accurately, so Piperine is to Curcumin... increasing the bioavailibility of the curcumin by more than 2000 fold ensuring that the body is targeted with all the anti-inflammatory protection on offer.

Ingredients

100g good quality shop bought hummus

1 tsp ground turmeric

grind of salt and pepper

squeeze of fresh lemon juice

fresh mint leaves to serve

Method

Take about a third of a tub of hummus (100g) and mix with the turmeric, add a good grind of black pepper to activate the curcumin compounds in the turmeric.

Next a squeeze of lemon and some fresh mint or dark leafy greens.

Served here on Nairn's Gluten Free Oatcakes, but just as tasty in a baked sweet potato and topped with fresh herbs and toasted pumpkin seeds or as part of an Ottolenghi style mezze plate.

TIP: I always use freshly ground black pepper. Knowing what a key roll piperine plays in activating certain foods I want my peppercorns to be ground freshly as I use them. If you dont have a really good pepper mill, most stores sell black pepper in glass jars with a mill lid. (the only caveat being recylcling....). Piperine is so remarkable to this effect that there are patents for its use in the pharmaceutical industry to enhance the effects of several drugs, ensuring that they stay in the blood for longer. (Piperine) so let's ensure that we use those trade secrets to boost the status of our diets and wellbeing
